Named after an early sea-god in Greek mythology with connotations of versatility and adaptability, Proteus is the most compact vessel in the Bibby HydroMap fleet.

Designed to provide an excellent working platform for coastal survey operations, MV Proteus can work up to 60 miles from a safe haven under MCA Category 2 and has a maximum speed of 24 knots. The vessel benefits from a shallow draft of just 1.0m making her ideal for inshore operations, while the hull design ensures exceptional manoeuvrability at both low and high speeds and incorporates a low drag profile providing excellent fuel economy.

Surface positioning is provided by C-Nav 3050 GNSS and Hemisphere VS330 GNSS systems and an Applanix POS MV Wavemaster inertial navigation system, with water column positioning provided by a Sonardyne Scout USBL. The vessel features a moon pool, hydraulic A-Frame, and custom retractable transducer mounts, and is capable of operating a full spread of survey sensors, including a multibeam echosounder, side scan sonar, sub-bottom profiler and magnetometer. This capability optimises consistency between datasets acquired by Proteus and Bibby HydroMap’s 24hr vessels; 27.5m DP1 flagships 'MV Bibby Athena' and ‘MV Bibby Tethra’ and 26.5m ‘MV Chartwell’.
